West Africa Drought

The lack of rain in Niger is causing food security problems for children and their families. The Sahel region crosses through eight-countries (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal) in West Africa and forms a barrier between the Sahara desert and the rest of Africa.  Across the Sahel crops failed and food was scarce, leaving 15 million people -- including at least 1 million children below the age of five -- at risk of malnutrition.  Conflict in Mali, which  displaced more than 200,000 people, increased the demand for emergency assistance, according to UNICEF.  Action was urgently needed to prevent widespread famine as was seen in the Horn of Africa when millions died from hunger and malnutrition.

East Africa Drought and Famine Response

The largest of ERDO's crisis response interventions in 2011, we raised funds to supply emergency food and other care. While access to food  improved, there were still families who were not been able to return to their homelands and needed food assistance.

In 2012 ERDO continued raising funds to provide food assistance for malnourished people in Northern Kenya.

ERDO responded to several floods in the Philippines in 2012, including Typhoon Bopha.

Typhoon Bopha struck the island of Mindanao in the Philippines in the early morning hours of Tuesday, December 4, 2012. This storm was the worst of several last year in the Philippines with wind strength of 130 miles per hour and heavy rainfall, triggering landslides and floods along the coast of southern Mindanao and in farming and mining towns inland.

ERDO, as one of 10 members of CCA (Canadian Churches of Action) participated in a joint project to assist those affected in three of the hardest hit provinces: Surigao del Sur, Compostela Valley, and Davao Oriental.

Through this joint project ERDO provided funding to assist with repair and construction of shelter, personal hygiene kits and bottled water as well as provision of food items such as rice.
