Zimbabwe Food Crisis -

Five months of emergency food needed for 3,000 families

Zimbabwe Children from North TsholotshoZimbabwe is suffering from the worst food shortages since 2009.  The World Food Program states that “ 2.2 million people - a quarter of the rural population – will not be able to provide food for themselves during the 'hunger season' of October 2013 to March 2014”... the majority of these families are located in Tshlotshlo, where ERDO works.

And the worst of the hunger gap season is yet to come.

We need your help to provide food for families to get them through the next five months until the next harvest in April 2014.

The poor harvest was caused by a late start to the rainy season, then a severe drought, followed by flash flooding destroying the crops, crops were replanted only to be destroyed again this time by an infestation of worms.

Families in Tshlotsho who were able to harvest any portion of their crops had only enough to last them from 1 – 4 months. This has resulted in people with very low purchasing power without the means of accessing basic food in the markets where costs have increased by as much as 63% in Tshlotsho.

ERDO needs your help to feed 3,000 families (18,000 people); families headed by children, grandparents, single mothers and families affected by HIV/AIDS or other physical challenges. With a 4:1 match through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) $50.00 will provide one family with food for five months. Families will recevie 50 kg of maize grains, 10 kg of beans and 5 ltr of cooking oil. A gift of $250.00 can help feed five families for five months. Please respond quickly and generously.
