Community Development

1. ERDO is assisting Global Workers Michel & Louise Charbonneau with the resources to construct a primary school at the new Ministry Centre. Over 500 children in our CCP program will attend school at this location.

The Ministry Centre is vital to the community as it also provides a safe and clean environment for our child feeding program which reaches local community children who live in abject poverty.

2. In partnership with local community organizations, ERDO has begun a clean water project in the community of Gwo Jan, just outside the capital city of Port-au-Prince. A local team of experts are overseeing the construction of a new water cistern, located at a critical water source, to serve over 5,000 people in the community of Gwo Jan, as well as the larger neighbouring town of Petionville.

Prior Assistance in Haiti

Buildings flattened by the earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010

Crisis Response in Haiti

Haiti was dramatically changed by the powerful earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010. The earthquake affected the lives of over 3 million people. 200,000 people lost their lives with an additional 250,000 injured.

Our early response involved building temporary shelters and child-friendly spaces, where children could continue their education as their school buildings were too badly damaged to accommodate students.

ERDO made strategic investments in Haitian communities and continues to develop key partnerships in Haiti. All of the projects we were involved in helped to strengthen the role and influence of local churches:

  • Assisted the Charbonneaus (PAOC Global Workers) in Port au Prince with the construction of the ministry centre includes a primary school. Over 500 children in the ChildCARE Plus sponsorship program receive nutritious food and education
  • Ensured long term community development and food security through support to agricultural cooperatives that focused on sustainable food production. In the community of Duchity ERDO had a food security program with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) that had 2:1 matched funding, funding the construction of food storage silos and water cisterns
  • A community health project, funded by ERDO worked to treat and prevent cholera for 1,500 people
  • Houses were built through employing local labour

We’re working hard on your behalf to continue in partnerships that will result in excellent programs that will continue beyond 2017 and help build a brighter future for Haitians.

Food Relief & Security

As described above, ERDO is operated in two major food security programs in Haiti.  One, with partner CRWRC, and the other with FIDA/PcH.  ERDO helped Haitians grow crops with greater yields. We also provided training and marketing skills, creating longer term solutions to help move people towards self-sustainability.
